Sustainability specialists help organizations minimize the negative impact of their operations on the environment. They work with management to develop an overall sustainability program.

They also monitor the progress of these programs and educate employees on how to incorporate greener practices into their day-to-day work. Sustainability specialists make recommendations on any aspect of operations that may help to meet organizational sustainability goals. Often this involves changes in waste management, building construction, HVAC systems, and water resources.

Specialists need to be familiar with the scientific principles behind sustainability, as well as environmental regulatory standards and compliance rules. Sustainability specialists communicate sustainability plans to management, and must be able to discuss both the technical and lay aspects in reports. Some sustainability specialists also train and educate employees on adopting sustainable practices.
