Asset managers manage the procurement and implementation, and coordinate the use and operation of an asset management system. They develop, implement, and manage a program to assess, monitor, and report on the maintenance of a transit system's capital assets. They coordinate the development and acquisition of a software-based asset maintenance management system and prepare reports, presentations, and correspondence about the transit system's assets.

Asset managers must be skilled in project management, system administration, data analysis and reporting, and budgeting. They must be proficient in using MS Office; have excellent oral and written communication skills; be able to use sound judgment; and be able to manage time effectively.

Asset managers work in a typical office environment, and have little exposure to excessive noise or adverse environmental conditions.

Employers prefer individuals with a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, project management, engineering, business administration, public administration, economics, accounting, or a related field. Prior experience is valuable and may include relevant maintenance, administrative, or systems experience; transit asset management, IT, purchasing, or maintenance experience; or project management, cost benefit analysis, and database experience. Any combination of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities can substitute for the education requirement.
